Applying for a Summer Job

When you’re looking for a summer job, think about its value for today and the future. In addition to earning money, will the job help you build important life skills?

Whether you plan to apply at a local business or work for family, friends, and neighbors, these tips can help you land the job:

  • If you need to fill out a job application, ask a friend or family member to review your application and make suggestions on how you might improve it.
  • Ask people who have a good opinion of you if they will provide a reference. Then, let them know that they might be contacted by the company.
  • If you are stopping by a business to drop off your application or going door-to-door to let neighbors know you are open to work, dress appropriately and make a good impression by acting in a professional manner.
  • Don’t be afraid to follow up! If someone has expressed interest in hiring you, give them a call (or text) to see if they would like to hire you. Be polite and stay positive!

Volunteering

If you are not working, consider volunteering! It won’t be a way to make money, but it will pay off by providing work experience and learning opportunities. Plus, future employers (and colleges) will appreciate seeing it on your resume.

Volunteer work also gives you the chance to help others and change the world for the better. Get in touch with local charities and organizations or check out volunteermatch.org for volunteering opportunities that line up with what you care about.
