Graduation Is Around the Corner: Learn About the 3 Scholarships We Offer Our Members3/14/2022

It's getting closer to that time of year. High school seniors are thinking about the upcoming start of their freshman year of college. This exciting time can also be stressful if you are not financially ready for this new step.

Luckily, there are a number of scholarship opportunities available. Financial aid applications should be completed as quickly as possible at this stage of the year. Let's discuss the three scholarship opportunities we offer our members here at OUR Credit Union.

Theodore Cologie Scholarship

We award two $1000 scholarships each year for graduating high school seniors. The applicant must be a member of OUR Credit Union, not their parent(s) or guardian. They must be pursuing their education at an accredited institution; college, university, vocational, or trade school. The applicant must be taking a minimum of six credit hours for the upcoming semester. If you've been awarded one of our scholarships in the past, you are ineligible to apply again.

With your application, please turn in the following: one recent letter of recommendation, two personal references with full name, phone number, and email address. Also include a 500-word essay on the following topic: Describe an event in your life that you are proud to say has helped shaped you into the person you are and how that will influence you in the future. Please also attach a list of school-related and community involvements.

Gwen Barr Memorial Scholarship

We offer one $1000 scholarship for those continuing their education from our local area. Again, the applicant must be a member of OUR Credit Union. The same guidelines are required as the Theodore Cologie Scholarship mentioned above. Please visit our website to view the applications. These can be printed out and returned to us in person at any of our locations.

If you want to receive student aid for the upcoming college year, you will need to fill out a Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA). If you do not submit a FAFSA, you will NOT be eligible to receive student aid. You can find the application here.

Remember, to be eligible to win one of our three scholarships, you must be a member of our credit union. We offer checking accounts that are flexible for those who are staying close to home for college or traveling a long distance to go to school. Visit one of our locations soon and let's make you a member.
